Breaking Point – why do mothers hurt their babies?

Postpartum psychosis is a severe mental health condition that can arise suddenly in new mothers. A temporary lapse in sanity that can cause women to lose touch with reality, sometimes with catastrophic consequences.

Research suggests about 20% to 50% of parents will have thoughts of harming their baby at some stage, especially in the first few weeks of life.

For the vast majority, this will remain just a thought – most likely an intrusive, unwanted one at that.  However, for some, they will find themselves hurting their child deliberately, perhaps causing serious harm and even death. The question is why?

This webinar explores areas such as maternal mental health, post-partum psychosis, personality factors, sleep deprivation, physical health, relationship issues and attachment.  The meaning of the child to the parent will also be explored.

Dr Pipon-Young will draw upon her experience of assessing cases for the family court.  Here she will discuss risk assessment strategies and discuss when and how rehabilitation might be possible:

The webinar will include:

  • With the case of Lucy Letby so prevalent in the news currently, Dr Pipon-Young, formerly lead Clinical Psychologist for an NHS women’s forensic inpatient service, will give fascinating insight into what drives mothers to harm their babies.
