Dr Beale has ten years’ experience as a consultant liaison psychiatrist in a busy hospital in East London. She has considerable clinical experience working with highly complex patients with medical and psychiatric illness and has been involved in numerous cases of people lacking capacity to make decisions about medical treatment. She has broad clinical expertise and a particular interest in suicidality and self-harm, psychiatric emergencies, mental capacity for medical treatment, and eating disorders and malnutrition in people with psychiatric illness. She is nationally recognised as having expertise in mental capacity, particularly in regard to suicide, and has given evidence in Parliament on the Draft Mental Health Bill. She has published articles in medical journals on assessment of mental capacity and teaches about this at postgraduate level in critical care and pre-hospital medicine.
